Kilimanjaro 2013

In February 2013 I will try to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (5850mt),and fly from the top with a paraglider together with many other pilots.
I am currently trying to raise funds to donate to local Tanzanian charities Plant With Purpose and The One Foundation.
100% of the funds I raise will go directly to these local charities, who focus their efforts on community, environmental and humanitarian aid.
The target is $5000 and so far I managed to raise $3000; time is running out and and if I can’t raise the minimum amount (which I stress once again will go 100% to charity and it is not for personal expenses) , then sadly they cannot guarantee me a permit to fly from Kilimanjaro. When we all signed up to Wings of Kilimanjaro, we all made that commitment to raise the minimum of US $5000. If we couldn’t raise it, then either we back it up with our own finances or we do not go. I therefore ask for your help, please donate, even a very small amount to help me reach the roof of Africa, fly from the top and help the ones in need.
You can donate via credit card or paypal here:

http://wingsofkilimanjaro.kintera.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=1041962&lis=1&kntae1041962=299A0B242E7A4C418FA710772F4F1EFA&supId=368156117

PWC Sun Valley 2012 – Back home

Paragliding Word Cup 2012 Sun Valley, USA from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

Writing this from Vegas where I spent the last three days…looking forward now to go back home after this experience.
This was my third participation in a world cup and I think that it is going to be a while until the next one.. I need to progress further and improve as a pilot. I know I can defend myself prettey well in the flats or moderate terrain, but until I learn to fly properly and without anxiety in a high mountain environment, there is no point in racing at this level. I don’t know why
I fly soo poorly at Word Cups and have lots of bad luck; the first one in Japan in 2010 we only flew two tasks and I was a bit unexperienced and with a serial class wing back then when everybody was on R10s, no goals; the second one was in Brazil this year where we flew only 2 tasks again and I had problems with my wing (Boom X out of trimming) and had to fly a GTO that was lent to me..therefore again at a disavantage; no goals made and this one..well you read it… again no luck with the weather even if I stayed there…I think I need to be more selective about which comps and sites I will go to fly. Normally I do quite well in Nationals and International comps , but in PWC events I fly like shit, maybe it is the pressure..I don’t know… now back home..I miss it there.

Sun Valley PWC 2012 – Day 3 Tuesday 21st – Game over

Sun Valley PWC task 2 from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

Yes, it is game over for me; I made the decision this morning; after the dreadful task I flew yesterday with 0 points for airspace infringments I just don’t have the necessary motivation and focus to race with these guys in this terrain and conditions in the hope of getting a good result in. Maybe I am being too hard on myself but I don’t think I am world cup material just yet; at least not in this wild enviroment and air. Every time I take off here I feel nervous and unrelaxed which leads to bad flying decisions; it is not that I am not used to strong conditions (Spain in the summer where I normally fly it is very strong, and I flew strong places before like Quixada’ or Valle), being so used to fly in the flats, it is the big mountains that make me anxious (always thinking about landing places, rotors, valley winds, leesides etc..) and here if you are not 120% focused and committed you can easily put yourself in a dangerous situation, especially if you fly low. I never had a single situation of danger here, not a single collapse or anything like that but I do not feel relaxed. I had lots of messages of support from many friends; thank you everybody, but I guess sometimes a pilot in our sport, so beautiful but also very demanding and with its dangers, has to make these kinds of decisions (this is the first time in 8 years competing that I bail out and certainly I do not have to demostrate anything to anybody). This is a very hard lesson to learn (I have very mixed emotions about this decision) but hopefully I will come out stronger. In the end if your brain and heart are no tfully in it and if you are not having fun, there is no point doing it. Fly safe guys and have a great rest of the comp in these amazing mountains and scenery.I will probably regret this decision but I am off to Vegas now to have some serious fun … :-)

:-) Ciao

Sun Valley PWC 2012 Task 2 Monday 20th

Start Pont Task 2 Sun valley PWC from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

What a dreadful day for me; started off very well and well positioned on the start point at 4100mt,I was loving it..I was with the first group after the first crossing of the valley ; then I started to lose it, lose the gaggles, lose the thermals and eventually bombed out after only 18km on a 193km task on an awesome day with awesome conditions (sweet climbs, light winds and cloud streets); I don’t think I ever flew so bad in a comp task…every decision was bad, could not climb well.I I even lost a +5 thermal; where I bombed out it was almost impossible to do it, but I managed it.. I just dont know..maybe I am not good enough for this kind of competiton level, maybe I am too intimidated by this wilderness and big mountains.. I could have gone with at least three different gaggles to make the crossing to the flats but I always waited to get higher and get more altitude (the crossing was over some pretty wild terrain with no roads) which never arrived. I am really down this evening and thinking about leaving this comp and do some sightseeing and tourism for the rest of the week; something I have never done before in a comp but that is the way I feel now. I know I am a better pilot than this but there is something here in my mind that is just blocking me..I feel nervous when I fly here, not really going with the usual beautiful state of mind and flow of free flying; pheraps because I never fly in the big mountains and almost always in flatlands. And I know I can fly 200km, I have done it twice before.. I’ve just lost today a great chance to have made an unbelieveable flight over some of the most spectacular terrain ever.

PWC Sun Valley Day 1 Sunday 19th

a 61km Task which was stopped today due to thunderstorms; a long queue a launch, very uncomfortable to wait in the sun dressed up like you have to go to the moon, with Oxygen, extra clothes, extra water etc.. I launched quite late and I had to wait a good 15 extra minutes when I was ready to launch as a guy on an Enzo in front of me struggled to get airborne but would not move away. In the meantime everybody was in the stratosphere at what we believe from beow to be at least 4500mt. I hooked up a good thermal that tooke me to 3300mt but suddenly it died away. I was with a group of 5 pilots and we all went searching ahead but only found sink as in the meantime the could cover was very extense. I heard on the radio that down below in the valley it was gusting at 22mph (35km); on the way to the waypoint it was already very black and looked like rain so I took the decision to go to land safely. I chose a big landing filed but even so I had t o negotiate a landing in very strong winds and turbulence, flying backwards at times. Once landed I heard on the radio that pilots were calling level three and reporting hail and snow on route. When I was packing up the glider I noticed a cut and tear on the leading edge/rigifoil; probably happened today on take off with all them stones around…I put some ripostop on it and should be fine…bad luck seems to keep on haunting me..

PWC Sun Valley Saturday 18th

GOPR0665 from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

Today was the official practice day; I had a good rest finally with a 12 hours sleep. This area is very beautiful indeed but also very expensive and exclusive; a bit like Cortina or St Moritz in the Alps. Hearing this morning comments from other pilots, it looks like I was not the only one to think conditions yesterday at King Mountain were rough; I think this will be a normal thing flying here, big air strong climbs adn wild terrain; not my preferred conditions and definitely not my cup of tea (I love flatlands flying) but we’re here and we have to face this music. Today the smoke cleared up a little bit and we were able to appreciate a bit more the beauty of this place. Le’ts hope that this smoke will go away in the next few days.
I got my Oxygen sorted out but with all the gear aI wear and the extra weight I feel a bit clumsy. Conditions today were weak but turbulent and nobody climbed a lot higher than take off (we flew from Baldy today). Tomorrow we start to rock and roll. Send some positive vibe and energy.; we all going to need it.

PWC Sun Valley Friday 17

Sun Valley PWC 2012 -King mountain flight 17-8-2012 from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

Today it’s been a very bad day for me.. arrived in Sun Valley at 4.30 am in the morning after a 16 hours flight, 5 hours driving and 8 hours time difference.. without sleeping.. got to the main landing area where pilots gathered around to arrange a trip to King Mountain launch; a 2 hours drive away to the east. This because the main launch of Baldy mountain was closed today due to fires in the area. The whole of the sun valley region is very smoky with low visibility due to various fires. I did not want to go at first but was convinced otherwise by several pilots; after all it is not every day that you getbthe chance to fly these places. We arrived there and it was also very smokey. during take off I accidentaly broke the screen of my cpilot. I was very pissed off in the air.. also found myself very tired and slow with my reflexes.. I had my first taste of what is like to fly here.. the place is unbelievably wild with strong thermals and turbulence.. the flying is very commiting and demanding. I flew for one hour and a half and the decided to go to land. Now off to rest. Flying without the precious af the cpolot will definitely add to the difficulties but that’s life and I will have to get on with it. .. that’s Friday 17th for you!
