Italain Paragliding Championship 2011 – Mt. Subasio 2-7 Aug 2011

The first high profile competition with only certified gliders was held in Umbria, my home land and region from the 2nd to the 7th of August. I went there very motivated and with great interest to measure myself against the Italian “big guns” top pilots, everybody this time on a playing level field; and also to have the chance to fly over the beautiful ancient landscapes of my homeland, the “green heart of Italy”, Umbria. 5 valid tasks out of 6. Very good conditions which allowed for 5 very technical tasks. I flew rather well (except in the first one) and ended up 24th overall; not a bad results given the very high level of pilots present (Italy is the second highest ranked nation in the FAI -CIVL rankings), many of them top PWC pilots and also former European/World Champions.
No incidents or reserve throws, and although it is early to draw any conclusion about safety, the overall consensus was that everybody felt “safer” and more relaxed on END wings; a very good and encouraging start after the tragic events of Piedrahita 2011.
Winner was Davide Cassetta on Niviuk Peak 2 followed by current European Champion and silver medal in the last Worlds, Luca Donini on Mantra 4. Task 3 for me was one of the most beautiful flights I ever made; we went down from Assisi to Trevi and back and then, with 1900mt over Mt Subasio we flew to Nocera Umbra and from there along the mountain range that leads to Monte Cucco (famous Hang-Gliding flying area) flying over Gualdo Tadino. Results here.
