Hoy manga de 82km con dos balizas en el valle y una en la ciudad de Covilha antes de un tramo en el llano. despego perfectamente , me voy a remontar a la primera termica delante del despegue y me vuelve a pasar lo mismo..super incomodo en la silla, sin casi la posibilidad de girar la termica de lo mal incorpordado que estaba y de lo poco que sentia la vela..unica solucion, ir a aterrizar y volver pa casa para no rayarme mas de la cuenta. No he conseguido volar ninguna manga en esta compe..una cosa increible.. la primera vez que me pasa algo asi en 8 anos de competiciones; vay error mas gordo que he hecho al cambiar de equipo con lo bien que iba y con motivacion y confianza a tope…la silla esta en venta por si acaso hay algun interesado..tiene 4 vuelos y es el modelo mas nuevo de la Genie Race 2. Estoy hundido…

Today an 82 km tasks with two waypoints in the valley, one above the city of Covilha before a long stretch in the flatlands…I took off early and nicely but again the same (in spite of the further adjustments made yesterday..) happened ..I felt extremely uncomfortable in the air and after a few turns of the thermal in front of the take off, I was left without any options but to go and land and go back home (two tasks could still be flown). this is the first time something like this happens to me in 8 years of competitions…I did not manage to fly a single task..something unconceivable…and especially as I came here very motivated and super keen after the good result in the Spanish Open and the very good flights and feeling with the R11…..The new harness is for sale (GIn Genie Race 2 ..the latest model if interested, size S) – I am really gutted.. Getting to goal today (from the reports I had) was very difficult with only a few pilots getting around 20km from the finish line….well done to who flew the farthest today (Possibly Micheal Bass from Australia with his UP two liner) and to the awesome meet director Mads who is now in the lead..good luck for the remaining two days..

Ayer subimos al despegue y nos pusieron una manga de 82km con goal en Espana en Lumbrales, pero nos encontramos ya temprano con un viento fuerte del sur y la manga fue cancelada despues del briefing. Aprovechamos el dia para ir a dar un paseo por estas bellas montanas y banarnos en un lago a 1900mt. La organizacion hasta ahora ha sido fantastica; ayer nos prepararon una fiesta en un bar del centro de Manteigas con bebidad gratis y buena musica. Hoy el dia parece bueno y vamos a subir al despegue.

Yesterday we went to the Azinha take off but the day was canned because of a strong southerly wind (they had prepared a 82km task with the goal in Spain). We took the day off and went for a hike in these beautiful mountains and also had a swiw in a lake at 1900t altitude. The organization so far has been fantastic; yesterday evening we had a nice party in a bar in Manteigas with free drinks and good music. Today looks like a good day..

Ayer nos puesiero una manga de 68km con dos balizas de paso en el valle y goal en Villar Formoso al confin con Espana. Solo dos pilotos en goal y 3 que se quedaron muy cerca. Nadie de los Espanoles llego’ lejos. La mayoria de los pilotos se quedaron antes de la balizas de Belmonte , parados por el viento moderado que habia. Para mi otro dia para olvidar…por la tarde del Sabado sali a volar para intentar adjustar la silla…me di un buen vuelo de una hora y media paseando por el valle a 1800mt, volaba con la GTO para poder asi soltar los mandos con tranquilidad y hacertodas las regulaciones en vuelo; pero aun asi y con la otra vela , me sentia muy muy incomodo..y ayer, con el viento y la turbulencia que habia en el despegue, no me sentia a gusto para probar si estos nuevos ajustes podian ir bien y no sali’ a volar. Me he dado cuenta que he cometido un error muy grande en pensar que podia cambiar de silla y adaptarme rapidamente en una competicion donde estamos encontrando condiciones bastante fuertes; con la Advance mi cuerpo era un extension de la vela, sentia todo perfectamente y podia compensar y anticipar los movimentos de la vela; con esta silla y estas regulaciones es como si la vela fuese un pieza independiente de mi y siento que mis reaciones no pueded ser las adquadas para un pilotaje perfecto. Un desastre, venia con mucha confianza y ganas despues de Piedrahita para intentar conseguir un buen resultado y disfrutar como antes de los vuelos , pero hasta ahora no pudo ser. Tenia que haber aguantado por lo menos hasta este campeonado con la otra silla…como se dice en el futbol.. equipo ganador no se cambia…

Yesterday we had a 68km task with two waypoints in the valley and goal in the border city with Spain, Vilar Formoso. Only two pilots in goal and three who got close. The majority of the pilots bombed out before and after the first turnpoint , stopped by the quite strong head-wind from the south. For me anothe day to forget…Saturday evening I went flying to make further adjustments on the harness; I took the GTO out and I had a 1 and a half hour flight around the valley with good thermals; I took the other wing because I could competely let go of the brakes and work on the harness; but even this did not solve my problem..I still felt very uncomfortable and could not thermal the way I used to; weghtshifting was especially still a problem. Given this situation and the windy and strong conditions on take off, I decided not to fly yesterday- This was very disappointing for me as I don’t recoll (in my competition career) , not having taken off during a flyable task). I fully realised now what I huge judgment mistake I made in thinking that I could get away with no problems in switching to a new harness during a competition. What a shame; I cam here with loads of confidence and motivation after the very good result in the Spanish Open… With the Advance, the wing felt like an extension of my body; not I feel it very detached for me which prevents me to active piloting like I used to. Today the forecast is windy but we will probably go to the take off to see if we can have a task. Like they say in football.. If the team is winning, DONT make any changes…

Ayer Sabado primera task de 92km con muy buenas condiciones- Para mi una pesadilla…acabo de cambiar de silla, desde mi advance Impress 2 con la cual iba tan bien y a gusto a una Gin Genie Race 2. No me encontre’ a gusto con las regulaciones que habia hecho a esta nueva silla y no sentia bien la vela como antes; la verdad es que iba muy incomodo y hasta me parecia de llevar otra vela..intente’ volar la task pero despues de un par de termicas bastante turbulenta no me sentia seguro y asi decidi irme a atterrizar…una lastima y un error muy grande esto de cambiar la silla a esta altura de la temporada y despues de haberme hechco muy bien con la nueva vela despues de 25h bien voladas en Piedrahita. Hoy hay prevision de tormentas por la tarde..a ver si podemos volar una manga rapida…estoy todavia regulando la silla pero un cosa la tengo clara, si veo que no me siento a gusto no tendria ningun inconveniente en no volar la task…volando velas de compe cualquier regulacion afecta mucho a la sensibilidad y a la estabilidad de la vela y para mi la seguridad es la prioridad. Y he tirado a la basura este Open no habiendo puntuado ayer…De los espanoles aqui David Cubel y Albero Barco llegaron a goal, Pedro de Gran Canaria se quedo’ corto por 3 km. First task yesterday, 92km with very good conditions – Lots of pilots in Goal. For me it was a nightmare…I have just switched from an Advance impress 2 to a Genie Race 2 harness and I did not feel comfortable in flight with the settings I made..I did not feel the wing like before and I did not feel safe in the air- I tried to do the task but after a couple of turbulent thermals it did not feel ok and I took the decision to go to land. I realised I made a huge mistake in changing the harness I was flying sogood with it to a new one in the middle of the season and before a competition; especially after the very good Spanish Open and after having completely adjusted to the R11…I feel now that I am on a different wing!.. Not having scored yesterda I threw away already the chance to do well in this open.Today looks like we will have another task (thunderstorms are forecasted in the evening); I have made a few new adjustments , but one thing is clear; for me priority is paramount and If I keep on not feeling right with this harness (new settings and adjustments o na wing like the R11 affect its stability and feel) I would not hesitate not to fly the task. 6 mangas validas de 7, buena organizacion y la garantia de Steve Ham como director de competicion para un buen desarrollo de las pruebas en condiciones que no fueron las clasicas de Piedrahita; tuvimos techos bajos, viento y termica debil pero aun asi se volo’ bastante bien. Yo estrenaba la Mantra R11 y realmente no sabia lo que me esperaba….tuve muy buenas sensaciones en los primeros 3 vuelos que hice con ella, pero en competicion seria diferente – Pues me encontre’ muy a gusto con la vela y desde el principio pude aprovechar sus increibles prestaciones pudiendo estar con el grupo de cabeza hasta el final de las primeras 3 mangas. Despues de las 3 primeras pruebas, de hecho estaba en el puesto 11 de la general del Open! Un pinchazo en la cuarta despues de 56km (la manga era de 114km con goal en Segovia) y otro orrible pinchazo antes del puerto de Villatoro en la quinta estropearon el increible resultado que estaba teniendo hasta entonces. En la ultima manga, llegue’ a goal muy tarde en una prueba muy dificil de 66km hasta Avila, y asi consegui’ salvar los trastos , volando solo por las montanas. Al final me quedo 13 en la General de Espana y 17 en la General del Open. Enhorabuena a Lee Paul Garcia nuevo campeon de Espana, un titulo muy merecido; Lee gano’ tambien en 2005 el campeonato de Berga que fue mi primer campeonato de Espana al que asisiti (con una vela 1-2, la Airwave Sport 2) – Enhorabuena tambien a los ganadores de las clases Serial, Sport y Club. For the Spanish Open 2011, not the classic and epic Piedrahita conditions, but nevertheless we could fly everyday and had 6 valid tasks; 3 of which flown in very weak conditions with wind and low base. I was flying my new Mantra R11 and had only 3 flights with it before the Open, so I did not know how would I perform with this “hotship”; well, it was a very nice surprise; the wing is a joy to fly, very stable at speed and with a great all round in-flight comfort. I could stay with the lead gaggle until the end of the tasks (after the first 3, I was 11th in the Overall ranking); then a couple of bomb outs(one of which very bad before the Villatoro pass) prevented me from getting a very good final result.
