Quixada 2015 – shattered dreams..

Quixada' 2015 from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

- Aver fallito senza averci realmente provato.

It did not go well .. I had great illusions and hopes to make one of those great flights of 300km – 400 km but this time the desert of Sertao has prevailed. I had chosen the last week of October, knowing that the winds and the conditions would be more robust than four years ago when, at the end of November in my first time flying in the North-East of Brazil, I had made two beautiful flights of 264 and 245 km with very good conditions for flying, and with plenty of adventure and excitement. But this time during the last week in October, the conditions were much stronger, almost extreme, violent; conditions in which in Europe one would not even take the glider out. Cloud base (the few clouds that were there during the week) was very low, the wind at times gusting not only at take off but also during the flight and on the ground at 38-39 km / h and plenty of violent broken thermals, dust devils and turbulence. A lot of stability in place which is famous for its flying with clouds and instability. I arrived Friday night, and on Saturday it was my first flight. I managed to do 215km landing at 14.00 with another 3 and a half hour of flight ahead, with a very high speed average ( 400km were possible) but always flying very low (maximum altitude of 1700 meters when the base is normally at 2220-2500 ..) I did not enjoyed this flight at all (strong wind and turbulence ) and this triggered in me a kind of anxiety, negativity, bad thoughts and fear of flying which unfortunately I was not able to dominate and subdue in the following days. This anxiety and concern was also very unfortunately fuelled by personal problems that I have been carrying around this year and they manifested again punctually just when I was in Brazil.
I slept very little, getting up at 4 o’clock (to go to the launch at 6 am ) with a knot in my stomach and my mind blocked by strong fears and concerns, and without being able to stay calm and worriless. The second flight was on Monday, and after two and a half hours in which I managed to fly 116k (!), and just when it was time to start believing in the possibility to fly 400km, I arrived on the plateau of Monsenor Tabosa and with the strong wind that pushed me toward the mountain and its potential and dangerous rotors, I decided to land (going backwards …). The group of pilots who were with me continued and managed to pass all the 320km mark (I was with the Tandem which then flew the world record) .Obviously with a mood so negative, tense and worried, it was difficult to fly well , find the motivation and concentration that a place like Quixada ‘demands. Unfortunately or fortunately, almost all of free flight is in the mind an and I felt (wrongly , but I could not do anything about it), that if I continued to fly in these conditions, pushing hard, taking risks (as normal if you want to fly 350km ) I would hurt myself or that something very bad would happen to me. Not only the conditions very tough but also having to fly over vast remote and uninhabited areas a without communication with hostile terrain where land, would mean you can be in a difficult situations. So I decided very reluctantly, given the time and money spent on this holiday, not to fly anymore. Every day was torture to see my friends and other pilots take off to try to make a long flight or beat their personal bests; I was getting ready to launch, however all of a sudden I started feeling within me loud voices asking me not to take off. I think it was a mistake to choose the last week of October (I was there 4 years in mid-November and the conditions were very different, a lot calmer and nicer ) ; the Sertao is extremely dry and arid after nearly four years of drought and the conditions changed. The conditions are in fact begin to improve at the very end of October, beginning of November with the best day I saw on Friday 30 (many clouds and instability)
Positive points:
- In the two flights of 215 and 116km I flew very fast with an average speed of 46km / h well within the average speed required to make 300km, go past 350km pass and reach 400km. In the first flight I threw in the towel for not taking a risk being low with high winds; so in theory the great flight was there for the taking although the conditions were not helping.
- I have been able to recognize, with great efforts, that if my head is not clear, it is better not to insist and push. Flying with these conditions is not for everyone and it is very challenging; if the motivation, concentration and desire are not 100% there is a serious risk of injury or land in the middle of nowhere, lost in the “robada” and having to spend the night waiting for help or retrieval.
- This is an experience and although it was a hard lesson for me, I have to know how to profit from it.
- Seeing many old friends, making new ones and living the Brazilian way with its wonderful people in one of the wildest and most fascinating regions in the world.
- The sertao will not move and next year it will still be there waiting for me with a new challenge.
Negative points
- Choosing the flying week period in October instead of November
- Even if the motivation and the head were not there; I had ample resources, skills and experience to fly in any kind of conditions, and maybe I let that the negativity, anxiety and unnecessary panic, got the upper hand. In 13 years of flying this is the first time that happens to me and I should not have let it, but as I say it is not a serene period for me.
- Having failed without having really tried.
- Thrown away a unique opportunity in the two flights to make 300 or even 400 km, and wasting time and money.

Flying in the Sertao is a unique experience. This place you either love it or hate it. There is nothing in between. I’m in love with this place, its people, its wild nature and extreme conditions, I already have the Saudade and will certainly return; I will not give in.

Volo Reggello (Firenze) – Marsciano (Perugia) 112 Km

One of my most beautiful flights ever. A dream come true. Took off from Praticino in the Pratomagno Massif south of Florence, crossed the Valdarno, Arezzo,Castiglion Fiorentino, Cortona Valdichiana, then Trasimeno Lake and flew over Tavernelle (my home village) and my house. Then carried on and landed in Marsciano. Awesome.

PWC mina lavero Task 6 Saturday 8th March

A 51km task which proved to be extremely difficult once again due to the poor thermic conditions and low base in the flats and the north wind which we would fly against in order to make the last two waypoints. I had a good start like most pilots at cloudbase, from there I chose to stay on the middle ridge to tag the waypoint; from there I made base again and was on my way; different gaggles split at this point; most of them taking the route of the mountain, Since iI had altitude and good line of clouds and some pilots in front I chose the flatland route; it was a mistake; it worked fine up until 7km to the waypoint pass Mina Clavero; suddenly thermic activity shut and the north head wind which I was flying against proved to be to much. The gaggles of the mountain managed 10km more by helping each other and taking every bit of climb available. I should have gone with the gaggle; I still don’t know why I am still making these kinds of mistakes… the gaggle has always the power.. In the end only 3 arrrived in Goal; Oriol Lazaro was first but may be second because of the cone and leading points. In the end I really enjoyed this flying trip to Argentina; nice flights, lots of fun in the company of good people. Time to go back home. Hasta luego!

Mina Clavero PWC task 5 Friday 7th March 2014 – 6th Position!!

Task 5 Mina Clavero PWC from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

The day started off very badly for me but it turned out to be an EPIC day… took off very late as they were following and ordered launch which means that I had to launch amongst the last pilots. Got off with a decent cycle (many good pilots bombed out after taking off today) and I made my way to the start point 4 km away. Being late meant that I was not able to get myself well positioned for a good start, I saw the leading gaggle well established on the upper ridge and shooting away at lightining speed and there was nothing I could do.. I got to the first waypoint on the flatland quite high and about to rejoin the second group but I got stuck not able to find decent lift and got stuck in that area for a good 40 minutes until after an epic struggle to remain in the game I found a decent climb which took me back to 1800mt. From there I really had no options but to go back to the mountain as I was with only two other glider and the flatlands was not working at all. I took the mountain route knowing that I would have to make at least one third more of the distance to get to goal. The ridge was working and little by little I made my way to the take off area. The flight up to this point was beautiful, flying closer to the rocky ridges in the company of condors..awesome. I did not know that the leading gaggle on the flats was struggling with may pilots dirting so I cointinue with my flight. Tagged the last waypoint, tagged the goal waypoint and was on my way to tag the last exit 6 km goal cylinder when the task deadline was on (18.30) so I did not have time to finish it and get to goal. When I landed I wad not expecting such a good result but in the end it turned out I came sixth . I am really happy . Shame about that dreadful second task , but anyway today it is time for celebration about a good flight and a very good result. Manana mas.

Mina Clavero Task 4 Wednesday 5th March

Mina Clavero PWC task 4 – Wednesay 5th mArch from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

An out an return task of 70km along the ridge was set with multiple start clocks. I took off among the very first pilot as I did not like the wait on take off of the previous days; especially with such a particular launch where pilots wait for the good cycle to launch and you can be stuck for a long time. I took the first start gate together with 6-7 pilots and together we made good way along the ridge. The view was stunning and the rocky faces of the ridge very scary. I arrived at the waypoint to the south very early and with a few pilots; then the leading gaggle got to us and together we headed back to the ridge. My mistake was not to follow them as they were heading very fast for the upper rocky ridge of the mountain; I preferred (wrongly) to stay halfway up the ridge together with few others. The leading gaggle hit a super line on top of the ridge and on the plateau and they were on their way to goal; myself I struggled to make my way back to the spine and get a decent altitude to make the final crossing into the flats and into goal. the ridge on the way back was booming with up to +7mt thermals, sometimes quite turbulent over those impressive rocky faces. As I headed on my way to goal in a good position I had to stop a couple of times to get some additional climbs; in the end I was too conservative, wasting way too much time and ended up getting to goal with over 600 mt; as a result of this a good 20 pilots overtook me in the last 10km of the task. Getting to goal was really important for me today; to regain some confidence in myself and to prove to myself that I can still fly well and be competitive. The task scored very low for me; a real disappointment as the difference with the first pilots in goal was significant. Still I finf it hard to accept that yesterday the 50th pilots got over 800 points and today being 35th in GOAL only got me 537 points… nevermind, I really enjoyed the flight today , one of the most impressive scenery ever. Real good. Manana mas.

Task 3 Mina Clavero 2014

GOPR3502 from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

A difficult 74 km task, a difficult start point and a really poor flying performance from me. Had a bad start point with loads of headwind on the ridge, then lost all the main gaggles, flew on my own for 24 Km choosing a route to the left of the waypoint to be on the upwind side until I bombed out before the plateau. Nobody made it to goal as the low base and the cross wind made it very difficult, but most of the field flew around 50km. I’m still flying like shit.

Task 2 PWC Mina Clavero 2014

Task 2 PWC Mina Clavero from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

After the heavy rain of yesterday today Monday the sun came out in force and we went up to the take off at 10 am. Because of the road not being in good conditions due to the rainfalls, we had to walk 30 minutes to get to launch. Once there we waited until 13.30 to have a task set up. It was decided for an out and return of 55km to the south following the ridge and back with goal in Mina Clavero airfield. The window was opened at 14.35 and the start one hour later. The first pilots who launched struggled to gain any height and some of them bombed out. After that, anarchy reigned at launch with several unorganized queues forming and many pilots occupying the launch area but not taking off. Then we heard on the radio that a pilot had an accident below the TO area and needed assistance. A Helicopter was to be called and because of this the launch was closed for a good 30 minutes; then seeing that the helicopter was not due anytime soon , the launch was re-opened but the chaos continued with intermittent launches. Then a good cycle came and about 10 pilots who were lucky to launch, climbed up and got away. By then the start was already opened and at nearly 16.00 at least 60 pilots were still on the ground waiting to launch. I waited like most of the pilots and finally got way very late; managed to climb well and started the task; got a very good line following the ridge, then at about 15km from the waypoint we started to get a strong headwind. At about 10km I heard several calls for level 3 because of strong wind on course and the task was stopped. It will be scored but worth only 100 points for the winner. Let’s hope that tomorrow things will improve.

PWC Mina Clavero Day 1 Task 1 – Cancelled & Carneval Party

Mina Clavero Carnaval 2-3-2014 from Silvio Zugarini on Vimeo.

PWC Mina Clavero 2014 – Training day Saturday 1st March

Woke up to a very cloudy sky, but then by 11 am the sun was out in force and big clouds were starting to form. We went up to the take off for our official practice day. Take off is quite large and a bit too flat but ok. The drop is not big (340 mt) and you need to choose the good cycle to launch or else risk an early landing if the conditions have not fully switched on. I launched amongst the first pilots and straight after talking off, I hooked a a good thermal up to base (2000mt). Base was very low today too and this means there are not a lot of flying choices/routes available. So my flight was not long but very enjoyable. Good sensation with the wing especially now ballasted up to 98kg; definitely a better and more solid feel. This evening is the safety briefing and welcome cocktail party. Tomorrow is the first task but the forecast it’s not great. We will see.

PWC Argentina Mina Clavero 2014- Friday 28th February – The arrival

Just got here in beautiful Mina Clavero – We arrived after an epic journey of 20+ hours, from Madrid to Buenos Aires, to Cordoba and then 3 hours drive on a beautiful mountain road to Mina Clavero. I was hoping to arrive in time for a little flight but it was a bit too late. The place is very rocky, rugged and not at all flatlands like I expected; also landings are not plentiful as I first thought.. Hopefully with good conditions and plenty of height, this will not be an issue. The village is very nice and charming, very touristic. Tomorrow we have the first practice day.
I really need to fly the Icepeak 7 as I only have 2 hours on it and need to adjust quickly.

Mandar buenas vibraciones..! Hasta luego
